About Quartzite 2×1″ Stone
Quartzite 2×1″ Stone is a smaller version of the quartzite decorative gravel, sized between 1 and 2 inches. Like its larger counterpart, it is rounded and smooth, with a natural quartz sparkle that gives it a premium appearance in landscaping and decorative projects.
This size is especially popular for walkways, garden borders, and drainage features where smaller stones are more practical and comfortable underfoot than larger aggregates. Its quartzite composition provides long-lasting durability, resisting weathering and color fading in Upstate South Carolina’s hot summers and wet winters.
Quartzite 2×1″ Stone will be available starting Spring 2026. Customers can pre-order to reserve early supply.
Local Applications – Quartzite 2×1″ Stone
Decorative Landscaping: Borders, beds, and patios where a smaller decorative stone is preferred.
Pathways & Walkways: Comfortable to walk on compared to 2×5″ stones.
Drainage Backfill: Provides void space for water movement in swales and larger stormwater features.
Erosion Control: Can be applied on gentle slopes or at the edge of ditches to slow runoff where smaller stones would wash away.
Filtration Gravel: Quartzite composition provides clean, durable filtration media.
Metallurgical Gravel: Used in industrial applications requiring high quartz content.
Coverage and Density – Quartzite 2×1″ Stone
Average density: ~18 cubic feet per ton
Coverage: ~90–100 sq ft per ton at 2″ depth
Coverage: ~60–65 sq ft per ton at 3″ depth
Note: May vary with placement and compaction method
Comparison to Other Materials – Quartzite 2×1″ Stone
Quartzite 2×5″ Stone: Larger size for bold landscaping accents or heavy drainage features.
#789 Stone (⅜″–½″ Granite): Much smaller, angular aggregate for driveways and drainage, not decorative.
River Rock (Rounded Alluvial Stone): Similar look, but less durable; quartzite resists fading better.
Masonry Sand or River Sand: Provides a softer, compactable surface; used where sand is required rather than stone.
Local Performance – Quartzite 2×1″ Stone
Durability in SC Climate: Holds up to heat, rain, and freeze–thaw cycles without breaking down.
Comfort & Safety: Smaller, rounded size is safer for foot traffic and play areas compared to larger stones.
Drainage: Maintains voids for water movement, making it effective in swales.
Decorative Longevity: Retains its sparkle and color longer than granite or limestone in local landscapes.
FAQ – Quartzite 2×1″ Stone (Upstate South Carolina)
What size is Quartzite 2×1″ Stone?
Rounded quartzite stones between 1″–2″.
Is it good for walkways?
Yes. The smaller size is easier and safer to walk on than 2×5″ quartzite.
Is it suitable for driveways?
Not recommended for main drive surfaces. Use Crusher Run for a base and #57 Stone for a stable top layer.
Can 2×1 Quartz Stone be used for French drains?
No. While 2×1 Quartz Stone is clean and durable, its size (1–2″) is larger than what is typically recommended for French drains. In Upstate SC, contractors almost always use #57 Stone (¾–1″) because its gradation balances flow and resistance to clogging. The larger quartz stones leave wide voids that can allow soil migration and reduce long-term effectiveness of the drain.
How much does one ton cover?
~90–100 sq ft at 2″ depth, ~60–65 sq ft at 3″ depth.
Is Quartzite better than River Rock?
Yes. Quartzite is harder, more durable, and maintains color longer.
How does 2×1 Quartz Stone compare to Surge Stone or Rip Rap?
2×1 Quartz Stone is smaller and smoother, making it best for decorative landscaping and light drainage uses. Surge Stone (2–4″ angular granite) is larger and angular, used for construction entrances, heavy-duty bases, and erosion control. Rip Rap (5–10″ armor stone) is even larger, designed for shorelines, culverts, and steep slope protection. Unlike those heavier-duty materials, 2×1 Quartz is chosen mainly for its appearance and lighter applications.
How does 2×1 Quartz Stone compare to #789 Stone (pea gravel)?
Both materials are small in size, but #789 Stone is an angular, crushed granite (⅜″–½″) commonly used for driveways, walkways, and French drains because it compacts slightly and allows good water flow. 2×1 Quartz Stone is larger (1–2″) and rounded, which makes it less suitable for drainage systems but more decorative in landscaping beds, borders, and accents.
Is it available year-round?
Yes, once released in Spring 2026, supply will be stocked regularly.
What’s the minimum order?
No strict 15-ton minimum. Smaller loads are available, though delivery fees apply.
