About Recycled Surge Stone

Recycled Surge Stone is a large recycled aggregate produced from crushed concrete and asphalt, screened to 2″–4″ size. Unlike compactable products like Crusher Run, Surge Stone relies on its angular shape and interlocking ability to stabilize slopes, prevent erosion, and withstand heavy-duty applications.

Because it is recycled, customers should expect occasional small wire fragments or minor debris. These do not affect structural performance but may need to be removed during installation.

Recycled Surge Stone is slightly lighter than virgin Surge Stone, which can result in more volume per ton. This makes it a cost-effective and eco-friendly choice for many heavy-duty applications.

Local Applications – Recycled Surge Stone (Upstate SC)

  • Construction Entrances: Controls mud tracking at job sites

  • SCDOT & SC DHEC require a stabilized construction entrance (6″ of stone over geotextile fabric) at all vehicle access points leaving a site. Surge Stone is commonly used to meet this requirement.

  • Erosion Control: Effective on slopes, ditches, and drainage swales

  • Slope Stabilization: Used to prevent washouts in clay-heavy Upstate soils

  • Heavy-Duty Base: Provides support under temporary access roads and work pads

  • Alternative to Rip Rap: Can substitute in some erosion control projects where spec approval is not required

Coverage & Density – Recycled Surge Stone

  • Density: ~17.5 cubic feet per ton

  • Coverage: ~40 sq ft/ton at 6″ depth; ~25 sq ft/ton at 9″ depth

Comparison to Other Materials

  • Virgin Surge Stone: Cleaner granite-based aggregate with no debris; required for DOT and spec-approved jobs.

  • Crusher Run: Compacts tightly for driveways and pads, unlike Surge Stone.

  • #57 Stone: Smaller, clean stone for drainage; often used with Surge Stone in layered systems.

  • Class A Rip Rap: Larger rock (5–10″) for heavy erosion protection.

Local Performance – Recycled Surge Stone in Upstate SC

  • Construction Sites: Meets SC BMPs by forming the stone pads required at site entrances per SCDOT SC-M-815-10.

  • Clay Soils: Stabilizes muddy access roads across Spartanburg and Greenville.

  • Temporary Haul Roads: Holds up under repeated heavy truck traffic.

  • Cost Efficiency: Widely chosen by contractors for erosion control and pads where DOT spec approval is not required.

FAQ – Recycled Surge Stone (Upstate South Carolina)

What is Recycled Surge Stone?

A recycled aggregate product made from crushed concrete and asphalt, with pieces ranging from 2″–4″.

How does it compare to virgin Surge Stone?

Recycled Surge Stone performs similarly in erosion control and stabilization but may contain small wire fragments or minor debris. For a cleaner option, see Surge Stone (Virgin).

Is Recycled Surge Stone cheaper than virgin Surge Stone?

Yes. It is less expensive while providing similar performance. See Surge Stone (Virgin) for comparison.

What is it used for?

Construction entrances, erosion control, slope stabilization, and heavy-duty base layers.

Can it be used for driveways?

Not typically. Surge Stone is too large for residential driveways. For driveways, use Crusher Run or #57 Stone.

How much does one ton cover?

Approximately 40 sq ft at 6″ depth or 25 sq ft at 9″ depth.

Does it compact?

No. Surge Stone interlocks but does not compact like Crusher Run or Recycled Crusher Run.

Does it have drainage capability?

Yes. The large, open voids allow water to pass through, making it effective for erosion control and ditch lining. For finer drainage, use #57 Stone. For heavier slope protection, see Class A Rip Rap.

Can it contain wire or debris?

Yes. Because it is recycled, small wire fragments or minor debris may be present.

Is it acceptable for DOT or spec jobs?

No. Recycled Surge Stone is not spec-approved and should not be used for DOT or engineered projects. Contractors requiring spec-approved material must source through DOT-certified quarries.

Can it be tailgate spread?

Yes, but due to the large size, results may be uneven.

How is it delivered?

By tri-axle dump trucks carrying up to ~22 tons per load.

Do I need to be home for delivery?

Not required if safe access and clear instructions are provided.

Is it good for French drains or residential drainage?

No. It is too large. Instead, use #57 Stone.

Is it eco-friendly?

Yes. It reduces landfill use and recycles concrete and asphalt into usable material.

Will weeds grow through it?

Unlikely, due to the large stone size and open voids.

Can it be topped with smaller stone?

Yes. Many contractors use Surge Stone as a base and cap it with Crusher Run or #57 Stone.

What is the minimum delivery order?

We deliver as little as 1 ton, but free delivery applies at 15+ tons. Smaller loads have a delivery fee.
